If cold drinks or brushing already cause discomfort, choosing a whitening product should not be your first step. Start by understanding the sensitivity.
Find out what is causing it
Sensitivity can have several causes, including decay, a cracked tooth, gum problems or exposed tooth roots. A dentist can identify the cause and discuss suitable treatment. Desensitizing toothpaste may help in some cases, but it is not a substitute for checking persistent symptoms. Read the ADA's explanation of sensitive teeth.
Do not rely on a no-discomfort promise
Temporary sensitivity and gum irritation can occur with whitening. A product category or ingredient name alone does not establish that the finished product will be comfortable for everyone. Review whitening considerations with the ADA.
Take useful questions to your dentist
- Is whitening appropriate while I have these symptoms?
- Which product and directions fit my dental history?
- What should I do if discomfort begins or returns?
Keep the packaging available for that conversation. Do not extend application time or combine whitening methods to chase faster results. If whitening causes pain or irritation, stop using the product and ask your dentist for advice before restarting.
